Description

CHARLES LIM IN CONVERSATION WITH ADELE TAN

Artist Charles Lim and curator Adele Tan discuss the genesis of Lim’s latest installation, Proclamation Garden, for the Gallery’s Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission series. They will address the ideas and issues raised by the new artwork and situate them within the artist’s practice, especially his seminal SEA STATE project.

This commission series is made possible through a gift by Far East Organization.

ABOUT PROCLAMATION GARDEN

The third work in the Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission series is Proclamation Garden by Charles Lim, Singapore's representative at the 2015 Venice Biennale. The artist will completely transform the landscaping of the Gallery's roof garden with plants found in reclaimed areas from Changi to Tuas and the Southern Islands, offering not only a greater biodiversity of flora but also an inquiry into Singapore's history of land reclamation. These narratives will be generated through the plants, whose transplantation, adaptation to survive, and eventual disposal tell the stories of Singapore's urban and coastal developments.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Charles Lim Yi Yong (b. 1973, Singapore) studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, London. A former competitive sailor, Lim’s practice stems from his bodily engagement with the natural world, mediated and informed by field research and experimentation in various media. Since 2005, he has developed a body of work entitled SEA STATE that explores Singapore’s political, biophysical and psychic contours through the visible and invisible lenses of the sea. Lim has participated in numerous institutional and international exhibitions, including Documenta 11 (2002), Manifesta 7 (2008), Shanghai Biennale (2008) and Singapore Biennale (2011).
