The goal of the Charge Nurse Intensive CE Series is to provide nurses with information and skills to be a successful charge nurse. Upon completion of this series, attendees will be able to do the following:
- Identify common leadership skills
- Identify two strategies to improve critical thinking
- Describe methods to incorporate initial direction, periodic follow up, and supervision skills into your workday.
- Identify two characteristics of an effective change agent.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills in dealing with difficult situations for charge nurses that arise in the clinical setting.

Phone cancellations must be confirmed in writing. Cancellations received four weeks prior to the start date of the series will receive a full refund of the registration fee. Cancellations received after four weeks and up to seven days prior to the start of the series will be assessed a $50 processing fee. Cancellations received seven days prior or “no shows” will not receive a refund. In the event that the program is cancelled, a full refund will be issued.

Cynthia Saver, RN, MS, has spent more than 20 years in publishing. She has held senior editorial positions, including executive vice president at Nursing Spectrum, a division of Gannett, Inc., which had a print circulation of nearly one million and two thriving websites. She currently writes and provides other editorial and continuing education services for many leading publishers. Cindy's articles have appeared in many national publications, including Nursing Spectrum, OR Manager, Nursing Management, AORN Journal, and American Nurse Today. She collaborated with many nurse writers and editors on the book "Anatomy of Writing for Publications for Nurses", published by Sigma Theta Tau International.
Mindy G. Spigel, RN, MSN, is a nurse with more than 30 years of clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She currently works as the coordinator of Organizational Effectiveness for CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System where she provides training to staff, primarily nurses, on various topics, and manages special projects. Spigel earned a bachelor’s in nursing from the University of South Florida and a master’s degree in pediatric nursing from the University of Alabama. She has taught in both hospital education programs and in the academic setting, and has presented numerous national, state and local programs.
Maureen Habel, RN, MA, has been a director of nursing staff development and a director of clinical nursing services. She has taught healthcare management and leadership courses, and has played a key role as an American Red Cross disaster nurse. She continually provides leadership for community-based disaster preparation and response efforts in her community. An award-winning nursing writer, Maureen currently lives in Seal Beach, CA.
Barbara Pierce, RN, MSN, has over 35 years of nursing experience with 25 years in emergency department and hospital leadership. Barb is active with the Emergency Nurse's Association at the local and national level. She is active in leading dynamic change activities with proven successful outcomes and has a particular passion for improving efficiency, operations, work environment and quality of care. Her current role is the Director of Emergency Services at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine.
Ruth Hansten, RN, PhD, MBA, FACHE, is the author of six books and numerous articles. Her mission is to promote healing and wholeness, transforming organizations through relationship enhancement and skills development. With 36 years of experience in nursing, she brings both a practical and humorous approach to the essential work that nurses do. For the past 20 years her national consulting practice has worked with nursing care delivery models, critical thinking, delegation and leadership skills, and interdisciplinary team development. She has developed a care delivery model and philosophy called Relationship and Results Oriented Healthcare™ (RROHC) and this model had resulted in improved patient outcomes, clinical indicators, employee engagement, provider satisfaction, and healthcare employee retention. Her doctoral research focused on critical thinking and clinical judgment and she incorporates her research into her teaching and consulting strategies. In 2008 the 4th edition of her Clinical Delegation Skills: A Handbook for Professional Practice book was published, as was her Relationship & Results Oriented Healthcare™ Planning & Implementation Manual. She has served as adjunct faculty for the University of Washington and Seattle University School of Nursing, and has lectured or consulted at 160 organizations. She currently serves as a Board of Directors trustee at a Pacific NW medical center.
