ABOUT THIS EVENT

In a world facing a climate crisis, crashing biodiversity and ways of life that simply aren’t sustainable, what can we as parents and educators do to make a difference?

There is a lot we can do…

There is hope…

We just have to think small…

Connecting the children in our lives with the birds and insect life around them will foster a love and connection to the natural world. Growing up with that connection to nature will develop adults with a connection and empathy towards the natural world. These will become the conservationists, biologists, environmentalists and climate change activists who will save our planet. What can you do to create these future Earth savers? You can connect them with nature.

WHO IS IT FOR?

  • Educators who are interested in building a climate care foundation into their community of learners.
  • Parents who interested in fostering an awareness of the climate into their daily lives.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

This is an interactive 2-hour session from 3:30 - 5:30pm.

  • Engage with a mini-field guide: Birds of Shekou and Bugs of Shekou to begin the exploration of "What is birding?"
  • Participate in a foundational sustainability, biodiversity, climate change learning walk. Particants will head outside for a Nature/Birding walk leaving Level 5 and meander to a wild garden
  • Discuss various flora and fauna, including Information about Banyan Trees and other types of plants in area. Stop to look at birds that will be there.
  • Identify species of birds in Shekou and discuss solitary and flock bird importance.
  • Sparking adult and children’s thinking, we will roll over logs and examine what is underneath, touch and examine the surface of trees and examine the texture of plants for the purpose of building awareness.

WHAT WILL YOU WALK AWAY WITH?

  • Knowledge of how a love for birds and bugs can “change the world”.
  • Understanding of the importance of getting kids and students outdoors to connect them to birds and bugs... even in an urban jungle.
  • An action plan to move forward with developing a climate culture with the children in your lives.
