Event Details

URU The Right To Be, Inc., returns to the National Academy of Sciences on June 10, 2019 to bring its engaging and interactive education and workforce development initiative, Changing the Face of STEM: The Power of Collective Impact, A Call to Action.

Join us for engaging workshops for individuals at stages throughout the STEM pipeline as well as the unveiling of our newest project,“You Can’t Be What You Can’t See,” CFS’s Virtual Reality Education Initiative. We look forward to sharing this day with you as we redefine inclusion and equity in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine.

8:00 - 8:30 a.m.       Registration and Continental Breakfast

8:30 a.m.                  Welcome in Auditorium

8:45 a.m.                  Roundtable: The Power of Collective Impact - Part I

                         Moderator:

Ronald Copeland, MD, Senior Vice President, Kaiser Permanente

Our collective actions must speak louder than our past words. To achieve change, we must invest in the America of today. Such an action must be a collaboration of our people, national foundations, and corporations. The need to change our STEM pipeline dynamic is obvious and urgent, as is creating a collective impact to build a national movement. This year our “sharks” include representatives from California Endowment, Intel, Coca-Cola, and Robert Wood Johnson.

8:45 a.m.                  Building Bridges: The Power of the Sisterhood - Part I

Women in STEM are their own “minority,” working in isolation to prove themselves in a man’s world. Through collegial sisterhood – black, brown and white – female voices share their journeys and conflicts working towards building a bridge which connects all women.

12:00 - 12:30 p.m.    Lunch Reception and Networking

12:45 - 1:30 p.m.      Launch of a Virtual Reality Initiative

                                  Opening Remarks:

Dr. Victor Dzau, President, National Academy of Medicine

Launch of “You Can’t Be What You Can’t See,” CFS’s Virtual Reality Learning Experience (VRLE). This remarkable tool reinforces and enhances STEM identification by enabling students to “see” today, in real time, the STEM professionals they can “be” tomorrow.
