The City of Houston’s Office of Business Opportunity Advisory Board presents its 4th Annual Champions of Diversity Awards Ceremony on Thursday, December 8, 2016. The ceremony will be held in the new Grand Concourse C of the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas, Houston, Texas 77010. The evening will kick-off with a 5:30 p.m. Pre-Reception and the Awards Ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m., Post reception at 7:30 P.M. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Economic Diversity - Going for The Gold.” Mayor Sylvester Turner is the Honorary Host of the event and is scheduled to provide remarks. We are pleased to announce that Houston First Corporation is once again our Partnering Sponsor.
The Champions of Diversity Awards Ceremony honors prime contractors, as well as Minority, Women, Small, and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (MWSDBEs) for their outstanding performances on City of Houston contracts. A City of Houston Department and Community Partner that has supported and contributed to the accomplishments of the City’s Minority, Women, Small, and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program will also be honored One of the evening’s highlights is the presentation of the “Ernest B. McGowen, Sr. Champion of Diversity Award.” This prestigious award is given to a person whose collective efforts epitomize the mission and purpose of the MWSBE Program. The City’s Minority, Women, Small, and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program is in its 32nd year and has awarded over $6 billion dollars to MWSDBEs on City contracts since its inception. The Program was enacted in 1984, to seek private sector assistance in easing difficulties that may be encountered by MWBEs and small businesses in accessing City contracts and to improve communication among small businesses, MWBEs, Non-MWBEs and the City of Houston. Carlecia D. Wright serves as the Director of the Office of Business Opportunity Department (OBO), under which the MWSDBE Program is administered.
