Event description

Description

ChamberQUEER, an LGBTQ+ chamber music series based in Brooklyn, NY, announces its first season, ChamberQUEER 2019. Featuring over a dozen LGBTQ+ members of the classical music community and highlighting the music of queer composers, ChamberQUEER 2019 provides an alternative, inclusive space within the local classical music scene.

On Friday, June 21, 2019, the series kicks off with a mixer at 7 pm, and an hour-long concert at 8.

The program features the music of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, as well as other local composers Jessica Meyer, inti, and the late Pauline Oliveros, alongside music by Ethel Smyth. The program is rounded out by early-music selections of Corelli, to open a discussion about queering the canon of classical music.

The series concludes on Sunday, June 23, 2019.

At 7 PM, acclaimed musicologists Emily Wilbourne and Maria Zuazu will lead a discussion of the series’ offerings, and explore issues of queerness within classical music as they arise from a panel discussion.

At 8 PM, ChamberQUEER will present its final concert of the series, featuring music of Hildegard von Bingen; Jessica Meyer; Saunder Choi; and Caroline Shaw. Madrigals of Gesualdo Monteverdi and Thomas Tallis are interwoven with the modern selections, as well as with improvisations on guitar by Grey McMurray, to explore the dialogue between early and contemporary music.

After the concert on Sunday, ChamberQUEER hosts an afterparty in partnership with Ginger’s Bar on 5th Avenue in Park Slope.
