Description

Women’s Forum: Challenging sexism at work, in schools and on the streets

Let’s get together to discuss modern sexism, how to recognise it and tackling it at work, in schools and on the streets.

I'm delighted to announce our expert speakers on the night will be Dr Finn Mackay (UWE), Charlotte Gage (Bristol Women's Voice) and Rose Stephenson (University of Bath).

Dr Finn Mackay has been involved in feminist activism for twenty years, founding the London Feminist Network and reviving London Reclaim the Night in 2004. After working in youth work and education, Finn devised policy on domestic violence prevention before returning to academia and completing her PhD on the British women's liberation movement. She is currently a senior lecturer in sociology at the University of the West of England in Bristol and author of Radical Feminism: Feminist Activism in Movement.
Dr Finn Mackay's recent TEDx Covent Garden talk is now live here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVB7BWHaUT4

Charlotte Gage from Bristol Zero Tolerance, a new initiative set up by Bristol Women’s Commission working towards Bristol becoming a city free from gender-based violence, abuse, harassment and exploitation.

Project Manager at the University of Bath, Rose Stephenson co-ordinates evidence-based work to prevent sexual violence and harassment on campus. Promoting bystander interventions, empowering victims/survivors to report and establishing the most comprehensive support for students and staff, Rose is at the forefront of a growing network of inspirational women across the country that are challenging endemic attitudes in our higher learning institutions.

“One third of girls experience sexual harassment in school, study finds”. Sky News

“Teachers also bear witness to the widespread sexism in schools – 34% of primary school teachers say they see gender stereotyping on a weekly basis and 64% in co-educational schools say they hear sexist language weekly”. The Guardian

“Harassment survey: 'I'm a waitress but I feel like a sex worker'”. BBC

“Bristol has 'the highest levels of street harassment in the UK’”. Bristol Post
