As a clinician-scientist, for the last eleven years, Dr. Bota has led the UC Irvine Neuro-oncology Program in the search for effective treatments for neurological malignancies through investigator-initiated and consortium clinical trials funded by both the federal agencies and the private sector. Under her direction, the Neuro-oncology clinical program has transformed from a modest, local presence to a nationally-recognized center of excellence in neurological oncology.

As a neurological oncologist, she has a broad background in both neurology and medical oncology. Prior to my residency, she completed a formal PhD as a developmental molecular biologist in the field of mitochondrial proteolysis and its relation to free-radical formation and involvement in human diseases. Her post-doctoral work concentrated on designing and conducting the preclinical work needed for the screening and validation of promising anti-glioma drugs.

Her present career focuses on the successful translation of basic science discoveries into the care of cancer patients. In her laboratory research, she has developed in vitro and in vivo models to evaluate the effects of novel compounds in relevant glioma models. Additionally, she was the lead PI/institutional PI for more than 40 clinical trials during the last ten years. She has led two successful Investigational New Drug (IND) applications and one Investigational New Device application (IDE) and the drugs/devices are currently in phase I and II clinical trials.

Dr. Bota will talk about the Challenges and Novel Approaches in Brain Cancer
