Event description
SPECIAL EVENT: virtual chai seminar--includes a tutored-tasting and hands-on custom chai creation. Tea samples + shipping included, serves 2

About this Event

Originated in India, chai simply means “tea”. In India, every family has their own chai recipe, which makes it one of the most versatile teas in the world. Recipes for chai vary across continents, cultures, towns and families.

Today, In America, "chai" has become known as a flavor of tea with predominantly cinnamon or cardamom notes. It can be made with or without milk, and drank hot or cold. You can enjoy it at your favorite teashop or create your own custom blend at home, incorporating your own favorite flavors and appealing to your individual mindset or mood. Together we will deconstruct chai and learn about creating custom blends.

In this 90-minute virtual class, tea specialist and co-owner of NYC’s Luv Tea, Wan Di will educate you on the history of chai, its cultural significance, its consumption in ancient and modern times, and will then guide you through a lesson on brewing and tasting chai, including:

  • Assam tea (the strong Indian black tea, the base for great chai)
  • Plus: 3 custom chai blends designed by Jaesy Wang, Tea-Master at Luv Tea

o Milk Tea Chai (Grade 9): A chai designed specifically to be made with milk.

o Masala Chai (Grade 8): The best-selling chai from Luv Tea.

o Valentine’s Chai (Grade 9): Chai mixed with chocolates.

The seminar will conclude with an interactive experience where you will receive instruction on how to build an excellent cup of chai from scratch. By the end of the class, all participants should be able to make their own chai from common kitchen spices and be confident enough to create their own family blends.

CHAI: A Virtual Tasting Special Event image

Wan Di is the co-owner of Luv Tea, and apprentice to Tea-Master Jaesy Wang. Together, the pair ran Luv Tea, a tea shop in West Village that featured tournament-grade oolong teas from Jaesy’s farms on the mountains of Taiwan. Before getting into the tea business, Wan was a nuclear physicist and worked in various tech companies throughout NYC.

About Luv Tea: Founded in 2015, Luv Tea began as a wholesaler and tea consulting company for many milk tea shops in NYC and Philadelphia. We realized that most of these shops buy a tea-making system from China, and follows the recipe to the letter. It is a mass-produced system where the staff have little to no knowledge on tea. We wanted to use our knowledge as award-winning tea farmers to create a company that make quality products using seasonal and local ingredients. In 2016, we opened our first retail location in West Village. Over the years, we have proven that people love and want an excellent cup of tea. www.luv-tea.com
