This workshop will focus on how to effectively plan and teach for conceptual learning within an early year settings. Whilst curriculums are moving to more of a conceptual framework, they are focussed on practices aimed beyond the experience of very young learners. This workshop will focus on how to notice conceptual meaning making in play, how to plan in response to young children’s fluid theories, interests, ideas and preferences. In this hands-on workshop participants will have the chance to work through their curriculum documents to identify concepts that can be used to develop meaningful conceptual units for young children that promote learner agency and the opportunity to follow student’s interest.

Participants will:

Understand the importance of conceptual learning and teaching.

Unpack the difference between a conceptual framework and a fact-based framework.

Consider deeper conceptual layers in ‘loose parts’ explorations and other play experiences.

Build understanding of the crucial role of learning spaces that respond to children's meaning making processes

Consider appropriate strategies to observe and document children’s developing understanding of conceptual ‘big ideas’.

Develop provocations that will invite students to be curious and inquire.

Consider how to plan learning engagements in response to children’s thinking, ideas and evolving theories.

Workshop Presenters Biography:

Anne Van Dam

Education has been Anne’s passion for more than 25 years. She has worked in a variety of schools in the Netherlands, China, Singapore and Switzerland. Since 2000, she has have taken on various positions in schools, combining teaching with leadership responsibilities. Anne has been an IB workshop leader since 2005, sharing her passion for young children and child initiated play with educators in PYP schools. As a PYP visiting team member, she tremendously enjoys supporting schools with the implementation of the IB PYP framework.

Anne joined EtonHouse International Pre-School in August 2007, drawn to the school for its vision to establish early childhood education centered on young children’s competencies in making meaning and building relationships.

In August 2011, Anne moved back to Europe and took on the responsibility of Assistant Principal at the International School of Zug and Luzern. At ISZL, she supported the development of a new vision for learning and teaching in the early years. This direction places a strong emphasis on relationships, play, spaces and documenting learning.

Anne moved back to the Netherlands in 2015. This has given her the opportunity to work with the PYP development team at the IB regional office in The Hague. Anne has been working on the PYP review focusing on student agency, early years, inquiry and the several aspects of ‘the learning community’. She still works for as an IB workshop leader and workshop developer and collaborates with international schools as an independent educational consultant.

Tania Lattanzio

Tania LATTANZIO is an experienced international educator. Previously a teacher, coordinator, and manager with the International Baccalaureate, she is now Regional Director of Innovative Global Education. In this role she works as a consultant extensively in Asia Pacific and other parts of the world. This role involves developing and conducting professional development for teachers and leadership, modelling pedagogy in classrooms, developing and designing curriculum for schools and working intensively with teaching teams, through mentoring and coaching, to improve planning, teaching and assessment. A passionate educator Tania works closely with educational institutions to specifically meet their needs in supporting school reform, making significant shifts in pedagogy and curriculum in both local and international settings. Tania has co-written a book "Taking the Complexity Out of Concepts,' available through Hawker Brownlow Publishing in Australia.

Cancellation Policy

Please note that each workshop will proceed based on participant registration. Innovative Global Education will inform you by 3 October, 2018 if the workshop is to be cancelled. If the workshop is cancelled your full payment will be reimbursed.

Workshop Participation

If Innovative Global Education is informed by 3 October, 2018 that a participant is unable to attend the workshop, a full refund will be given. If notification of not being able to participate is after 3 October, 2018 IGE will be unable to refund the registration fee.

If, for any reason, a school needs to either transfer a registered participant to another workshop from the workshop registered or change the name of the participant attending a workshop, Innovative Global Education can make these changes on request from school or participant.

International travel:

Songdo is conveniently located 20 minutes from the Incheon International Airport. Upon arrival, head to the Incheon Taxi ranks outside door 5 of the arrivals wing. A metered taxi from the airport to Chadwick International should cost about 30,000KRW.

Domestic Travel:

Songdo is accessible from Seoul using the metro system (Incheon Line 1) or express busses. More detailed maps and route numbers are available on Chadwick International's webpage. Parking is available on campus.
