CGS Library In Person Visits


Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays 10 am and 1 pm

The CGS Library is excited to be welcoming researchers back to the library. We will be following Covid protocols at this time. All visitors must have a reservation to visit until further notice. Registration for visiting the library will go online after 8 pm on Wednesdays a week before the sessions, and close at 5 pm and 8 pm the evening before the session. They will be available in 2 1/2 hour shifts from 10 am -12:30 and 1 pm - 3:30 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, with a limit of 5 visitors per session. Please see the CGS Covid-19 page for more information. See Registration Information below for your required agreements.

You may use the CGS computers, or bring your laptop. Using your laptop on the CGS network, will allow access to our subscription websites.

IMPORTANT: Your registration is not valid until you agree to our Covid policies and procedures and click 'Register'

If you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, or have been in contact with anyone who has confirmed COVID-19, DO NOT visit the library.

Your name will be registered with the Breuner Building security access website.

You will have approximately two hours and thirty minutes to visit. Do not arrive more than 5 minutes before your scheduled time. An announcement will be made at the end of the session. Place any library materials you used in the quarantine area. Wipe down keyboard and other items you touched, gather your items and leave through the front door.

Before registration is complete, you will need to agree to the following:

• I agree to adhere to all facility rules and staff direction while in the facility.

• I understand I will be directed to leave the facility if I do not adhere to facility rules or staff direction.

• I agree to wear a CDC-approved mask at all times and to adhere to all social distancing policies.

• On the day of my visit, I will affirm:

  • I am not experiencing the following symptoms in the last 24 hours: fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, or other COVID-19 symptoms listed by the CDC.
  • No person in my household has symptoms or tested positive for COVID-19.
  • In the last 14 days, I have not knowingly been exposed to anyone who has symptoms or tested positive for COVID-19.

 Non-member admission fee is $5.00* per session

The society offers research services, online indexes and databases, and a research library housing over 38,000 reference materials from California, the United States, and around the world. CGS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. The library is conveniently located in Uptown Oakland, one block north of the Paramount Theatre, at 2201 Broadway, Suite LL2. We are three blocks from the 19th Street BART Station.
