Event description

Description

Community Financial Literacy is a non-profit based in Portland that offers financial literacy courses and one-on-one financial counseling for individuals and families. Our services are open to all refugees, immigrants, asylees, and low-income individuals in Greater Portland and Lewiston/Auburn, as well as parts of York County and parts of Westbrook. Last year we served 515 individuals from 24 different countries.

Many refugees and immigrants come from cash-based societies and struggle to understand the complex American financial system. The lack of understanding and access to U.S. financial institutions is a primary barrier to economic and social integration into the local community. Our courses not only instruct participants on good money management practices but also build aspirations by showing them how to save for college, work towards homeownership, purchase an automobile or start a business.

The 2018 Annual Celebration celebrates our 10th Anniversary since our founding in 2008! It is a chance for members of the community to come together to celebrate the work and successes of CFL, and the impact the organization has had on the lives of the immigrants that live in our community. There will be networking, food & drinks, music & entertainment, an awards presentation, and silent auction. There will also be a short a panel discussion with former CFL students. All funds raised will go towards CFL’s programming.
