Substance Abuse Among Older Adults

In America, 78 million baby boomers are heading in to retirement years. According to the Institute of Medicine, as of 2010, approximately five to eight million older adults - about 14 to 20 percent of the overall elderly population, had one or more substance abuse or mental health disorder.

Alcohol and drug abuse are often difficult to detect in older persons, mistaking symptoms for signs of aging.  Physicians receive very little education on substance dependence, and misdiagnosis is frequent.  Compounding the issue is that there are often multiple health care providers and multiple medications.  Addicted elderly are often isolated from loved ones.  They may hide their use, or it is perceived to be "one of their few pleasures in life".

This introductory / intermediate level program provides participants with the educational skill set to assess and develop a plan of care with older clients with substance abuse issues through review of diagnostic criteria, research based evidence and case presentation.  Program content looks to utilize and expand upon the clinical skills of engagement and assessment, along with treatment modalities considered in substance abuse situations.

Participants participating in this program will be able to:

* Identify two criteria for diagnosing Substance Abuse Disorder according to the DSM-V (Diagnostic Statisical   Manual)

*  Name four different types of substance abuse among older adults

* List two assessment screening tools to evaluate for substance abuse

* Identify two characteristics of age sensitive treatment

* Explain the role of substance abuse prevention in Health Care Reform
