The criminal investigator is a gatekeeper for the justice system following a criminal act. An experienced investigator's skills will be as diverse as the crimes being investigated-from domestic abuse to burglary to homicide, and many more. It is critical investigators be ethical and unbiased as they perform their duties and always strive to determine the truth. Has a crime been committed or is there a legitimate explanation for the matter being investigated?
- Law Enforcement Officers
- ME/C Investigators
As a criminal investigator, you must be able to identify and secure the crime scene; conduct interviews of witnesses and victims; interrogate suspects; identify and properly collect evidence, including trace evidence; and establish and maintain the chain of custody. Once a criminal investigation is underway, the criminal investigator must demonstrate knowledge of all crimes and investigative techniques for misdemeanor or felony and violent or non-violent crimes. An investigator also must accurately and unbiasedly document each step in the investigation process and be proficient at testifying regarding all cases at trial.
This material can serve as a guidebook for the history and development of forensic studies, ethical behavior of the investigator, evidence collection and preservation, investigation management and the investigator's courtroom demeanor and testimony-a few of the most important tools of the professional criminal investigator.
