Trainer’s BIO

Ponch

Brian 'Ponch' Rivera started his career in fighter aviation where he learned the essentials of teamwork, leadership, and coaching during his tours as an F-14 instructor and demonstration team member. His combat experience at the tactical and operational level of war combined with his advanced education prepared him to become an expert in Agile and Operational Excellence.

From Counter-Terrorism to Counter-Errorism, Brian “Ponch Rivera’s focus is on developing the capacity teams and leaders need to survive and thrive in today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment. A former U.S. Navy F-14 instructor and foreign area officer, “Ponch” leverages his military experience in High-Reliability Organizations, Human Factors, Crew Resource Management, Red Teaming, and Operational Design to help organizations build the resilience, agility, and safety they need to survive and thrive on their own terms.

Brian holds a MBA, MA, and several certifications in project management and Agile methodologies. He has experience coaching digital transformations in more than 20 companies and applying the Cynefin and OODA (Observe-Orient-Decide-Act) loop frameworks to safety, business agility and cyber defense.

Recently, Brian was selected to engage with over 70 leading academics, executives and high-performing teams in an effort to help identify how the U.S. Navy can improve its agility. The top two challenges in Defense and industry, according to his engagements, are the same: understanding complexity and building the leadership and teamwork skills fit for the digital age.

Ponch is also Cynefin qualified trainer and regularly works with its creator, Dave Snowden, on developing Cynefin in Defense. You can find him speaking at Agile conferences around the world, including eXperience Agile in Portugal and various Scrum Alliance conferences.
