Event description

Description

The College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is offering certificate courses in agroecology. This is a 15-hour course offered three times between June and July 2019, consisting of interactive lectures, videos, and discussions. It is designed to encourage thinking in terms of climate resilience, rather than focusing on climate change. We will also discuss related research and activities at UDC and elsewhere. The course is offered by Dr. Mamatha Hanumappa, CAUSES project specialist in specialty and ethnic crops. Invited speakers include Dr. Emmanuel D’Silva, a former World Bank environmental scientist who continues to work locally to make a global impact, and Ms. Holly Poole-Kavana, a local herbalist who believes in the healing and soothing power of plants, and promotes the protection of plant habitats.

The course is open to all and there is no prerequisite. Participants must attend the entire course in any one of the three sessions. Certificates will be issued after successful completion of the course. Please wear clothes that are comfortable for possible walking.

Topics will include:

  • Principles and Practices of Agroecology

    • Conservation Agriculture, Climate-Smart Agriculture, Urban Agriculture, Precision Agriculture: What, Why and How?

  • Ethnic and less-known crops

    • Plants that are climate-resilient and highly nutritious – including edible weeds and useful herbs

  • Sustainability and Local Engagement in an Era of Climate Change

    • Making Composting a Way of Life

    • Bringing Sustainability into Our Lives

    • How Conservation Agriculture Can Impact Climate Change
