Event description
Learn how to prepare for disasters and how to help your community after a disaster.

About this Event

CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

This is a two-part class. It starts with an online portion, covering the knowledge parts of the CERT Basic curriculum, including:

  • Disaster Preparedness
  • The CERT Organization
  • Disaster Medical Operations
  • Disaster Psychology
  • Fire Safety and Utility Control
  • Light Search and Rescue
  • Terrorism and CERT

This online knowledge portion of the class takes approximately 12 hours, scheduled at your convenience. It must be completed by March 1. We will provide instructions on how to take the online portion at the beginning of January. The online portion is broken into 14 sessions; we recommend you complete one or two sessions per week in order to complete the online portion by March 1.

Those who complete the online knowledge portion of the class by March 1 can proceed to the in-person portion of the class, teaching the physical skills for the CERT Basic curriculum, including:

  • Usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Patient Assessment, Transport, and Treatment
  • Extinguishing Small Fires
  • Light Search and Rescue
  • Simulated Disaster Scenario

The in-person skills portion of the class is taught from 9:00am to 5:00pm on two successive Saturdays, March 6 and 13, 2021. It will be held at Sunnyvale Fire Station 2 (NW corner of Wolfe Road and Arques Avenue).

On successful completion of the class, you will be invited to join the Sunnyvale CERT deployment team, which supports the professional responders in Sunnyvale's Department of Public Safety. The CERT deployment team has monthly advanced training and drills, and gets called out for disasters, emergencies, and public service events. Joining the CERT deployment team is optional, but it's a great way to support the community and maintain your disaster response skills.

IMPORTANT: Space in this class is limited. Please do not sign up unless you fully expect to complete the 12-hour online portion before March 1 and attend both full days of the in-person portion. This class is open to anyone over the age of 18, but preference will be given to Sunnyvale residents.

COVID-19: The in-person skills portion of the class will be taught outdoors (rain or shine), in small groups, in a fashion that complies with all applicable public health orders. Individuals who are at high risk for COVID-19 due to pre-existing health conditions should not sign up for this class. If public health orders become more restrictive, the in-person skills portion of the class may need to be rescheduled or canceled.
