This workshop will dive deep into the overglaze and underglaze decals Kala used in her recent collection of work, Quench.

About this event

Kala will demonstrate her approach to using photographic and gold decals on readymade ceramics, tile and pottery. She will share how to design and outsource custom decals and lead experimental slab building exercises using underglaze decals directly applied to wet clay slabs. Kala will also demonstrate best practices for liquid luster application (this cannot be done by students during the workshop due to safety issues).

Kala Stein (b.1979) is an artist and designer working at the intersection of craft, design, and new technologies. Her work explores notions of beauty through efficient systems of making, intentional materials, and innovative approaches to fabrication including molding and casting techniques. Kala received her MFA in Ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2009. Her studio is located in Sonoma and is open by appointment through https://kalastein.com/.

Her work made in response to the 2017 wildfires is in the exhibition Fire Transforms at the Palo Alto Art Center, curated by Rina C. Faletti, September 17-December 10, 2022.

This class is for all levels, even those with no clay experience.
