Event description

Description

Students will learn foundational techniques of working with clay, with a focus on three techniques: pinch pots, coil-building, and slab-building. These techniques can be used to create sculptural and functional work, or combined with wheelthrown elements to create truly original works.

The first segment of the class will be a mini-lecture, where students will learn the basics of working with clay from start to finish: types of clay, tools and materials, a little about construction, drying in preparation to be bisque-fired, glazing, and final firing. The second segment will be hands-on. Students will use forge-provided tools and clay to practice building techniques by hand, with instruction. Due to the timeline of ceramic work (as well as studio storage reasons), students should not expect to leave with a fully completed project. This is just an introductory open-ended course to teach them about tools and materials, construction techniques, and a general overview of the entire process so that they may be able to create their own work in the future.
