About Celia Hightower:
Mrs. Hightower serves as the CFO of El Rio Community Health Center and takes great pride in her role there Most recently, she received awards for top CFO of the year in Arizona for Non-profit organizations, Woman of the Year YWCA, and inducted into the hall of fame of her local school. She will share with us her experiences in being in this leaderhsip position, her various passions and how they contribute to her success both past and present.
Celia Sarabia Hightower has spent her entire career serving the community of Southern Arizona, nearly thirty years in the area of health care. She attended the University of Arizona where she first obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. While working for St. Joseph’s Hospital managing the Emergency Department, she continued her education seeking to improve her knowledge in finance and health care management and obtained her MBA & MS MIS. Upon graduation she went into the world of banking and became Vice President of Bank of America. She was recruited by a community leader to help transform El Rio Community Health Center into a National recognized health center. In 1987, she accepted the position of COO and CFO; with the tremendous growth of the health center as of 2009 she now serves as CFO.
During the last forty-three years, El Rio has provided health care to hundreds of thousands of Tucsonans. It has become a respected private, non-profit institution built by a board of directors representative of the community served. The Center is a model of community-based action to provide comprehensive health care services to the medically underserved. It is recognized locally and nationally for the quality of its programs and staff and the dedication to those who most need health care services, but often have not received them.
