Visionary Leadership Award: Robert J. Birgeneau is Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley. He is known nationally as a leader in equity and inclusion and for his commitment to ensuring access to higher education for disadvantaged students, especially those who are undocumented. Under his leadership, Berkeley became the first public university in the nation to offer scholarships to undocumented students and to create a resource center for their support.
Community Justice Award: Tenants Together is a nonprofit organization dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of California tenants. As California’s only statewide renters' rights organization, Tenants Together works to improve the lives of California’s 15 million tenants through education, organizing, and advocacy.
Pro Bono Champion Award: Cooley LLP attorneys contributed over 33,000 pro bono hours in 2012. In addition, in 2012, Cooley obtained a judgment for five individual plaintiffs against Fremont-based Avemos Financial and its owner for damages incurred as a result of Avemos’s loan modification scheme, which was intended to defraud homeowners in financial distress and was primarily targeted at Spanish-speaking immigrants of modest income.
