Description

CENTRAL VALLEY

EDUCATION JUSTICE FORUM

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 2019

9AM-3PM

THE FALLS EVENT CENTER, 4105 W Figarden Dr, Fresno, CA 93722

Did you know that the Central Valley has the highest rates of in-and-out of school suspensions of all the regions and counties in California that disproportionately impacts the poor, students with disabilities, LGBTQ youth and youth of color? How shall we critically examine the school to prison pipeline that cuts off students from the positive interactions of schools and funnels our students from school to the juvenile and adult criminal justice system and pushes them to prison?

The school to prison pipeline is related to “Zero-Tolerance” policies, their police-based enforcement, and to failing schools that are overcrowded, inadequately resourced, and highly segregated. Rather than creating an atmosphere of learning, engagement and opportunity, current educational practices and policies have increasingly blurred the distinction between school and jail and have increased the risk of students being suspended, expelled and/or arrested at school.

The Central Valley Education Justice Forum offers a unique space for networking and collaboration to address broad systemic and transformative changes by increasing awareness and engagement in school discipline reform and redefining a healthy school environment.

The Conference aims to draw together youth, parents, and community members from throughout the nine Central Valley counties of Kern, Kings, Fresno, Madera, Merced, South Sacramento, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Tulare county to advance equity and justice as a form of movement building.

Central Valley Movement Building (CVMB) is a coalition of community based organizations in the Central Valley working to expose and dismantle the school to prison pipeline in Kern, Kings, Fresno, Madera, Merced, South Sacramento, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Tulare County.

CVMB is also a member of Dignity in Schools Campaign California (DSC CA) whose goal is to end the School-to-Prison pipeline and to radically embrace and fight for truly safe, holistic, and healing schools for all.
