The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God endures forever.
Isaiah 40:8 NIV
Our time in this workshop will center on gaining fresh insights into the purpose and power of God’s Word for our daily lives. The Bible is a powerful thing—even dangerous. It is “alive and active” and it has the ability to penetrate deeply into our souls to do its work in us. If we let it. The Apostle Paul told young Timothy that “all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” We’ll unpack that to examine what God’s Word can do in us, if we desire to be that “man of God” who is “thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
James Sweeney Bio:
Dr. Sweeney served for more than thirty-five years at Western Seminary in Portland, retiring in 2002 as Academic Vice President and Provost. He continues to serve in a part-time capacity as Distinguished Professor of Pastoral Theology. He also served as Interim President of North Portland Bible College from 2011-2015.
His heart has always been rooted in pastoral ministry. After his ordination to the ministry in 1962 he served several churches before joining the seminary faculty to be engaged in training young men and women for ministry. His first love is teaching the Word of God, believing that it is God’s revealed truth the provides power for daily living.
Dr. Sweeney maintains an active schedule of preaching and teaching, and serves as an elder at Hinson Baptist Church in Portland.
