Event description

Description

Arthurdale Heritage is hosting a cemetery restoration workshop on October 14! Rebekah Karelis with the Wheeling Heritage Area and Adventures in Elegance, LLC will teach an hour training first to teach participants basic skills, tools, and techniques used in cemetery restoration. We will then complete a 2-hour hands-on work session at the historic Fairfax Family Cemetery, resting ground for Col. John Fairfax, his wives, some family members, and an undocumented number of slaves.

The most positive aspect of learning to conserve gravestones at a local cemetery is that during the course of the workshop, a gravestone or small monument will be stabilized and cleaned. We will pay special attention to gravestone cleaning techniques. The philosophy of cleaning will be discussed and safe cleaning techniques will be demonstrated on gravestones that will benefit from the cleaning treatment. Workshop attendees will clean the additional gravestones.

We will also discuss the basic resetting of gravestones and we will work on leveling a few of the leaning gravestones in the cemetery.

Because of the hands-on aspect of the workshop and the small size of the cemetery, space is limited to 15 paid registrants.
