Regenerative medicine refers to the process of replacing or regenerating human cells, tissues or organs to restore or establish normal function e.g. bone marrow or organ transplants, cell therapies, tissue engineering and gene therapy. They are categorised by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) as advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs).

Over 70 novel ATMPs are in phase III development for a wide range of conditions. A small number are currently marketed in the UK for ultra-rare conditions but several more are expected to impact on greater patient numbers from mid-2018 onwards. These therapies are potentially transformative – often personalised to the individual patient, offering the potential of long term remission, some given as single treatment described as ‘one and done’, and highly complex products with regard to production, administration, adverse event monitoring and handling. There are wide-ranging implications for their managed introduction, encompassing clinical trials, aseptic services and quality assurance, pharmacologistics, health technology assessment, procurement and reimbursement, pharmacovigilance and education of both clinicians and patients. These medicines are also highly expensive – in the US novel funding approaches to risk share such as mortgaging and payment by results ‘pay per cure’ are being explored.

Dr. Dave Irvine, Consultant Haematologist in the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, Glasgow will give a presentation on cellular therapies such as CAR-T and how they can be integrated into clinical practice. There will be time afterwards for questions and discussion.
