Event description

Description

Join Wild Virginia and SAWS (Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards) on Sunday, Sept 29 for a work trip to improve the Cellar Mountain trail in the Saint Mary’s Wilderness. Together with SAWS leaders, we’ll be cutting brush along a long-neglected and overgrown section of the trail. This is in the rarely- visited western part of the wilderness area. Restoring this trail will make it possible to hike a long loop in the northwest section of the wilderness again.

This is a strenuous outing, since we have to hike two steep miles (1,600 ft elevation gain) up to the top of Cellar Mountain to reach the overgrown section. Bring lunch, snacks, plenty of water and work gloves. SAWS will provide tools (loppers, hand saws) and safety gear.

This outing was rescheduled from 22 Sept to 29 Sept due to unseasonably warm weather. We’ll meet at Smiley’s Travel Center, Raphine VA (I-81, exit 205) at 9am on Sunday, Sept 29 and drive together from there to the trailhead. Charlottesville carpoolers will leave from the Shenandoah Joe at2214 Ivy Road at 8am.

Wild Virginia leader: Dave Carey
SAWS: Joshua Tao and Emma Bouchard
