About this Event

NAWIC Greater Des Moines is hosting a networking event open to anyone in the Central Iowa construction industry, or related industries, in celebration of this year’s Women in Construction (WIC) Week. This event is free to attend and open to non-members.

Appetizers and beverages will be served.

Please share this invitation with others!

Please join us in helping support a local organization as part of our celebration! We invite attendees to donate to local nonprofit Give Grace Give Hope and their mission to end period poverty for girls and women in our community. They will be holding a large Period Packing Party in honor of International Women's Day on March 9th, and we will be collecting donations at our networking event. Please consider bringing pads, tampons, liners and/or cash to donate to the cause. You can also donate via credit card here - https://www.paypal.me/givegracegivehope.

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) originally began in 1953 as Women in Construction of Fort Worth, Texas, founded by sixteen women working in the construction industry. Knowing that women represented only a small fraction of the construction industry, the founders organized NAWIC to create a support network. Women in Construction of Fort Worth was so successful that it gained its national charter in 1955 and became the National Association of Women in Construction. NAWIC’s core purpose is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry. Today, NAWIC has chapters in states across the U.S. and provides its members with opportunities for professional development, education, networking, leadership training, public service and more.

NAWIC created Women in Construction (WIC) Week to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry nationally. WIC Week provides an occasion for NAWIC’s thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry. This is especially important as America's economy continues to experience a shortage of skilled construction workers.

The NAWIC Greater Des Moines (GDM) Chapter was established in 1963 and has members from general contractor, subcontractor, supplier, architectural, development and technological firms, most from the Des Moines Metro area with some even from Ames and Cedar Falls/Waterloo. Our membership is currently at nearly 60 women, holding a variety of roles in their companies, including project managers, estimators, coordinators, accountants, marketing, business development, workforce development, HR, executives and owners. We encourage our members to gain business contacts and knowledge, develop personal skills and lasting friendships at our monthly meetings and various events held throughout the year. Educational and entertaining speakers present programs at our monthly membership meetings, and we also tour job sites to give our members insight into current projects in the Des Moines area. We hold an annual golf tournament to raise money in order to provide scholarships for college students in construction fields. We are continually seeking ways to advance the causes of all women in construction, from trades women to business owners.
