INhlangano Yezizwe i-United Nations imemezele unyaka wezi-2019 njengonyaka wamazwe ngamazwe wezilimi zomdabu i-International Year of Indigenous Languages (i-IY2019), okuyisikhathi sokubungaza izilimi nobugugu bazo obusemqoka kakhulu. Isikhungo i-South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) naso sesiyingxenye yalokhu kubungazwa kwezilmi zomdabu, futhi sinkamunkamu ngalo nyaka. Okusemqoka kakhulu esikhungweni i-SADiLaR ukuthuthukisa izilimi zakuleli njengoba sihlanganisa izinsiza zezilimi namathuluzi ekhompuyutha ukuqinisekisa ukuthi asisali ngaphandle kulesi sikhathi sobuchwepheshe. I-IY2019 iyinkundla enhle kakhulu yokuba i-SADiLaR iqhubekele phambili ngesibindi ngemikhankaso yethu yokuqwashiswa, eyenzelwe ukusebenzisa nokuthuthukisa zonke izilimi ezisemthethweni zakuleli.

The United Nations has declared 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IY2019) and it is time to celebrate languages and their sacred values. The South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) has joined the movement and is very excited about the year ahead. At SADiLaR’s core is the development of the South African languages as we pool language resources and computational tools to ensure that our languages remain relevant in the digital age. The IY2019 forms the perfect platform for SADiLaR to venture forward with awareness campaigns dedicated to the use and development of all official languages of South Africa.

AIM OF EVENT

This event is to celebrate and create awareness of isiZulu as an official language of South Africa. SADiLaR will be celebrating all of the 11 official languages of South Africa by dedicating each language to a certain month of the year. We aim to promote South African linguistic diversity and multilingualism as part of the United Nations’ International Year of Indigenous Languages. SADiLaR has dedicated the month of February to celebrate isiZulu as an official language of South Africa.

OUTCOMES

Multilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way. We aim to preserve linguistic diversity and to promote mother tongue-based multilingual education through celebrating all the 11 official languages of South Africa.
