Event description
Join NYPAP at Castle Clinton to honor George McAneny's legacy — as a planner, preservationist, and beyond — in his sesquicentennial year.

About this Event

The Friends of McAneny invite you to join us for a very special event.

You’ve heard about the "Year of McAneny" for months. You've started learning about George McAneny’s accomplishments in transit, planning, and preservation. You've begun to formulate a sense of his legacy of fighting for civic principles in New York City. Now, it’s time to step offline into the real world and honor the man who wore many hats as we celebrate 150 years since his birth!

On October 17th at 9:30am, join NYPAP at Castle Clinton in collaboration with the National Park Service and The Battery Conservancy to commemorate George McAneny’s legacy during his sesquicentennial year. That morning, we’ll honor 150 “Spirits of McAneny" — New Yorkers working to support civic principles that advance George McAneny’s legacy.

Civic leaders like Kent Barwick, (emeritus, Municipal Art Society), Tom Wright, (CEO, Regional Plan Association), Concetta Anne Bencivenga, (Director, New York Transit Museum), Simeon Bankoff, (Historic Districts Council), and more will share excerpts from McAneny's inspiring speech “The Fight to Save Castle Clinton,” originally given by McAneny in 1950 as a stirring finale to his decade-long preservation fight to save Castle Clinton and The Battery from destruction by Robert Moses. We hope you’ll join us to commemorate the life and legacy of this unsung civic hero on the 17th!
