Description

Celebrating Danish Ahmed at Chemistry in Motion™

If you’ve ever attended Communicadance™ or Chemistry in Motion™ anytime after May of 2012, you likely remember Danish and his remarkably warm, kind, generous, and adventurous nature. Perhaps you’ve heard the most recent news of his passing.

After spending much of the turn into the new year in tears, crying and hurting at the loss of my dear friend, Danish, I’ve mostly arrived into the open fields and sunshine to celebrate all he has meant to me and to so many of you.

Danish and I traveled together to Boston, Montreal, and Buffalo. Mostly we traveled for contact improv dancing, but that was secondary in our freezing cold and snowy trip to Boston where we went for a peace gathering with Prem Rawat, driving all night before and after. On the day of his passing, Danish told me, “I really love Prem Rawat,” something I’d never heard him say before.

On the day of his passing, Danish asked me to send him a link to Prem’s Timeless Today app, where Prem would be giving a livestream talk on New Year’s Day*. I gladly offered to do so. I don’t know if Danish purposefully took his life. He certainly didn’t sound it on the day of our conversation just prior to his last night on our planet. He had talked about suicidal thoughts before, but it’s painful for me to realize that even as close as we were, I didn’t know how seriously he’d contemplated it, as other close friends since advised me. Although that talk on New Year’s Day helped me to come to grasp the loss of Danish, I so wish he could have heard it too, barely a day after Danish’s passing. In response to Prem’s daughter’s question about clarity and courage, it’s the first time I recall Prem talking about suicide. He also talked about the many friends he’d lost over the years. Profoundly synchronistic for me to hear what was shared. I so wish that Danish could have come to know deep peace during his lifetime. Peace and love are what Danish passionately dedicated himself to bringing into the world.

My tears in this moment, as I write, have turned into tears of joy. He left us in the way he wanted: dancing with friends. Although he must have known where he was headed that night as his body was in a deluge, he kept telling our mutual friend, Karey, that he was feeling very happy. When his body gave in, he was surrounded by friends who held kind and caring space for him.

Since the first time Danish came to contact improv dance on June 3, 2012, Danish has come to just about every monthly Communicadance™/Chemistry in Motion™ event we’ve held. His laughter, his playfulness, his openness to give and receive love, kindness, and generosity are gifts that I will always hold in my heart and I welcome you to keep them too. That’s what he lived for.

You may be one of the many people Danish danced with. You may be one of the many people who shared the dance space with Danish. You may be one of the many people Danish invited to Communicadance™/Chemistry in Motion™. You may be one of the many people whom Danish touched in all the circles where he played, such as theatre improv, authentic relating, personal development, network marketing, or elsewhere. You may be a family member with whom he argued, yet always loved, or maybe simply loved with no quarrels.

You are invited to come celebrate in the dance space that Danish so loved and that he worked so enthusiastically and generously to help build. Come share your stories. Come dance if you’re so inclined. We will do some of each. Both a time to console one another and a time to celebrate all that Danish has brought to each of our lives.

Here are the logistics for the afternoon:

Dovercourt Penthouse (top floor, 805 Dovercourt Rd., Toronto, just north of Bloor)

Settle in from: 2:45pm — Facilitated event: 3:15 to 5:30 — Open to stay to 6:00pm

Wear clothes suitable for yoga or dancercise if you’re comfortable doing so. If you get active in dancing, knee pads are a useful option. Come refreshed. You may even want to bring a towel and change of shirt. You might just find yourself getting some exercise! Best to avoid wearing perfume or scents, for the comfort of others. Know that the dancing is an option and your presence to simply share stories of Danish and witness the dance he lived and loved is so totally welcome.

This event is free of charge, naturally.

Remember your water bottle! Dinner together afterwards is an option. :)

PS.

*I warmly invite you to listen to the January 1, 2018 livestream of Prem’s talk, which is available as a recording. It’s free to download and watch on both Apple and Android devices and the link to the apps is here:
