_______ More on our Room to Read India Programs ______

Room to Read India's Literacy Program is the country's only children’s education program that develops both literacy skills and reading habits. Our Girls’ Education Program supports girls to finish secondary school and works with government stakeholders to advocate for girls' education.

Room to Read India launched in 2003 and it is now our largest operating region. We partner with government schools in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Telangana.

Our partnerships with local organizations and governments help us amplify our impact. With the overall increase in enrollment in primary school, decline in dropout rates, and the mandatory inclusion of school libraries under the Right to Education Act, Room to Read is prepared to further our programs across India in a long-lasting and scalable way.

Room to Read is Helping More Children in India by Scaling Our Work

A core component of our Literacy Program in India is our reading instruction. Our students can read more than three times as many words by the end of grade 2 than peers in non-Room to Read program government schools. Impressed with this achievement, the state governments of Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh have invited us to implement our early grade program at scale in their states for five academic years. We began with a pilot partnership in 360 schools across the two states in 2015 and began scaling the model across 1,000 schools in the two states in 2016. Part of our work will enable these governments to implement literacy interventions statewide, benefiting close to 4 million children.

Girls’ Education in India: Building Confidence, Setting New Goals

In order to constantly improve our program, we collect data to help us understand what works. In India we recently commissioned an independent study, interviewing parents, teachers and the girls to understand how our program increases girls’ motivation to study, their desire to stay in school, and their life skills competency. Alongside these key program outcomes, interviews revealed that girls in our program gain confidence and set new, brave goals for themselves.

Room to Read India Recognized with Two Media Awards for Children’s Rights and Gender Sensitivity

Room to Read India was awarded The Laadli Media & Advertising Award for Gender Sensitivity in the electronic documentaries category. The announcement was made today at an award ceremony held in Chinmaya Mission, Delhi by Population First, the award organizer. Earlier this month, Room to Read India was awarded 2nd place in the short film category contest by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Both recognitions are for videos produced by the organization which highlight the impact of its Girls’ Education Program, which supports girls in nine countries to complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions. Room to Read operates across seven states in India and has supported over 11,000 girls within the country through its Girls’ Education Program.
