The Write Club: The role of language expression in developing pre-literacy/literacy skills
Parents will learn the importance of helping their children develop pre-literacy/literacy skills and how they can foster/cultivate these skills with simple techniques gleaned from our session.
Sharon DiFino, PhD, CCC-SLP
Speech/language pathologist, Brooks Rehabilitation
Sharon is speech- language pathologist at Brooks Rehabilitation working with pediatric and adult patients. She was an assistant professor of Communication Sciences at Jacksonville University in the College of Health Sciences and more recently has been an adjunct professor in CSD for JU. She earned MA in Communication Sciences Disorders from the University of Florida. Dr. DiFino’s research areas include learning and reading disabilities with a special interest in dyslexia among the college population. She has also taught at Wellesley College, Universiteit Utrecht, the Netherlands, and at the University of Florida. Dr. DiFino has published in foreign language acquisition and communication science disorders journals. She frequently presents workshops on reading disabilities for teachers and speech-language pathologists in Duval and St. Johns County.
Yogi Kids Flow with Yogabar
This class will strive to improve each individual’s sense of self and the way they view their world around them. Yogis of all levels are welcome to find exploration of movement and breath in this relaxed, yet empowering session. This class will involve partner work so parents/caregivers will be included, with focus on connecting mind and body in present moment.
Kelly Frotten & Candice Horrocks
Kelly & Candice are the owners of Yogabar, a yoga studio located in the Fruit Cove area. The two met while obtaining their 200hr Yoga Certification in 2012. They bonded instantly over their matching yoga bags, and their friendship only grew from there... And so did their love of yoga! Yogabar was born shortly after they graduated yoga training (and so were their little girls!). Kelly and Candice feel very honored to be a part of the Jacksonville community. They look forward to meeting you on the Mat!
Why does my child act this way? An examination of behavior problems in children with special needs
Participants will learn to define problem behavior, identify common causes, understand when and why children demonstrate problem behaviors, and learn how to change behavior. Participants will also learn strategies for maintaining composure when carrying out behavior management strategies and what resources would help you be able to consistently use a behavior management program
Sandy Brown, MS, OTR/L, BCP, BCBA
Occupational therapist, Brooks Rehabilitation
Sandy Brown is an occupational therapist board certified in pediatrics and is also a board certified behavior analyst. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Florida where she is examining the impact of problem behaviors on a child’s ability to participate in daily routines. Sandy has nearly 20 years of experience in occupational therapy and has worked with children of all ages in many different settings.
Karen Cooper, PhD
Neuropsychologist, Brooks Rehabilitation
Karen completed her doctoral training in Clinical Psychology at the University of Florida. Her two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology had a primary focus in pediatric populations. Dr. Cooper has published on neurodevelopment in children with special needs. She provides informational seminars on neuropsychology for the Brooks community as well as workshops for caregivers on effective coping and maintenance of their emotional health.
