Event description
Defining occupational exposure limit to prevent benzene’s adverse health effects.

About this Event

Benzene is a mutagen and a known human carcinogen causing leukemia and other adverse health effects. In recent years, the data base and insights into benzene’s adverse health effects have significantly improved, leading different organizations to reevaluate occupational exposure limit (OEL) recommendations.

In the EU a binding OEL of 1 ppm is imposed for benzene which is currently under revision. The Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) of ECHA has proposed a value of 0.05 ppm, while the Advisory Committee of Safety and Health at work (ACSH) have proposed a value of 0.2 ppm.

The Aromatics Producers Association, a sector Group of Cefic, is organizing a free symposium on the development of an OEL for benzene. The goal of this symposium is to share insights on ways to interpret benzene epidemiology studies for deriving a safe exposure level. There will be presentations on reliability assessment of epidemiology studies, on how RAC and industry developed an OEL for benzene and how the overall available information led to a recommendation for an OEL in the EU. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion.

The program of this symposium is the following:

  • Prof M Zeegers (University of Maastricht): Quality assessment of epidemiology studies
  • Speaker from RAC/ECHA: Development of RAC opinion on benzene OEL.
  • Rob Schnatter/Steve Williams (Penman consulting): Developing a benzene OEL using study quality assessment tools.
  • Alick Morris (DG Emp): From a scientific opinion to a legally binding OEL for Europe.
  • Panel discussion with the audience on key regards for benzene OEL development.

The target audience of this symposium are interested stakeholders from academia, regulatory authorities and industry that work on the health and safety assessment of benzene.
