Mike Mahon Plein Air Workshop
Cedar Ranch - Clarendon, Texas
9 am - 4 pm • May 15 -17, 2017
Develop your painting skills in accuracy and spontaneity.
All mediums welcome. Demonstrations will be done in oil and pastel.
As a signature member of the American Plains Artists, Pastel Society of America and the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, Mike is the perfect instructor to advance your painting skills at the beautiful Cedar Ranch in the Panhandle of Texas . Plein air painting is a passion of Mike’s, and there is no better time than Spring time in West Texas.
You will discover how important and essential painting in plein air is to improving all your artistic skills, especially your studio work.
Be prepared for an intense learning experience. Mike teaches a process rather than a technique, and students consistently rave over their results. This workshop is beginner & intermediate friendly, but because of his unique and thorough presentation of classic painting principles, it will be challenging even for experienced painters.
The workshop will include PowerPoint presentations and plein air painting demonstrations. Because it is difficult to retain what is learned at a workshop, the following learning aids summarizing and illustrating Mike's teaching will be provided to each artist:
• Extensive new workbook
• Exclusive videos of Mike's lectures on plein air painting and a video of his painting demos.
A Systematic Painting Process
You will be introduced to Mike’s DiVine Setup©, which is a 7-step systematic approach to painting based on classical principles of art which are logical, learnable, memorable, and which free you to be more spontaneous while still in control of your painting. Mike will do demonstrations daily and you will spend most of each day painting with Mike’s close oversight.
To register click the "Tickets" button above and you will be taken to a page to register and payout. The workshop fee is $395.00 plus tax. You will have the option to pay the full amount now or put down a deposit to reserve a spot in the workshop. Once you register for the workshop, you will receive emails with additional information and a supply list. On the registration page it will show the closing date for registration, after which deposits and registration fees will not be refundable. Your registration fee includes a workshop workbook. If you have questions about places to stay, please email or call Mike or Cynthia Mahon at firstname.lastname@example.org, 505-795-4639.
Location & Daily Schedule
• The workshop begins Monday morning at 9:00 am at the Cedar Ranch headquarters building approximately 12 miles from Clarendon. This first morning, everyone will meet in Clarendon to be led out to the ranch location.
• Classes will from 9am to 4pm each day with demonstrations and class painting exercises. Most of the time we will be working at various locations on the ranch. There is a spacious porch and meeting room at the ranch house for lectures and painting if weather requires it.
• On Wednesday afternoon, Mike will do a class critique.
Skill Levels & Painting Mediums
This is a beginner-friendly workshop! Just call for a preparatory phone consultation with Mike if you have had little or no experience painting. You will learn how a systematic approach to painting will help free you from not being familiar with your materials or technique. I recommend pastel rather than oil or acrylic for beginners. Since so much of the information in the workshop is new, even for experienced painters, it will be a challenging learning experience for all. If you are an intermediate or advanced painter, you may use your favorite medium (oil, pastel, acrylic, etc.) but we recommend that you limit your choice to only one medium.

When & Where
For more than 40 years, Mike Mahon has captured the essence of the Texas, New Mexico and Santa Fe areas through his landscape paintings and portraits. His works focus on the unusual and off-the-path scenes, catching slice-of-life vignettes in bright and vibrant colors in his impressionist style pastel and oil paintings.
Mahon has studied under several internationally recognized artists, including Ben Konis (pastel and oil), Kim English (oil), Judi Betts (watercolor), John Budicin (oil) and Albert Handell (pastel and oil). He also has past experience in fine art, commercial art and photography, as well as previous work as a film animator, all of which has given him a unique and versatile eye for expressing himself through pastel, oil, acrylic, watercolor and photography.
