Green Infrastructure and Planting Soil Placement: Specifications and Inspections to Improve Success By Howard Stenn, Stenn Design

1 PDH, HSW     $20/per person

Specifying the proper soil for specific project conditions is often critical for successful landscapes, especially when the media is expected to manage difficult hydrologic conditions or concentrated flows typical in Green Infrastructure (GIS) projects. Experience shows that GIS and other soil specifications often include unnecessary qualities or test requirements, while essential steps to ensure proper site preparation, soil acceptance and installation are ignored. This session will look at what parameters are important to cover in specifications, and how installation methods and post installation site conditions can impact project success.  This includes real world examples of projects gone bad—or just temporarily off track.

10:15 – 11:15

Deep Understanding of Soil Testing Methods: understanding the process used in soil analysis can give increased context and insight that will allow for better decision making - by Kyle Bair, Soiltest Lab

1 PDH, HSW     $20/per person

Understanding soil analysis reports to use for contractor specifications can be complex and intimidating.  By understanding the process used in soil analysis, an increased amount of context and insight can be gained to be used for decision making.  Sample handling, nutrient extraction, and other physical and chemical properties that are obtained through laboratory analysis will be explained in detail.  Furthermore, certain critical tests will be explained in terms of development, execution, laboratory and method variability, QA/QC protocols, etc.
