Set in Colonial Havana, this Zarzuela sutured with Afro- Cuban tones and cadences, portrays the story of a beautiful mulatto girl who falls in love with a white aristocrat.
Originally from Spain, Zarzuela is a lyric- dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporing operatic and popular songs styles as well as dances. The names comes from a Royal hunting lodge, (the Palacio de la Zarzuela ) near Madrid ,situated in a remote countryside thick with zarzas or brambles. where King Philip IV of Spain, Queen Mariana and their court attended the first performance of this type of entertainment.
All Performances of Cecilia Valdés will be in Spanish. with supertitles in English.

Bilingual Foundation of the Arts
The mission of the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts (BFA) is to serve communities by presenting classic Spanish language drama and contemporary plays on Hispanic themes to English- and Spanish-speaking audiences, thereby bringing awareness of the diversity of the Hispanic culture through theater. Within this mission, BFA provides educational resources and training opportunities in the performing arts.
BFA’s vision is to positively affect the image and self-esteem of Hispanic people; to influence the inclusion of Hispanic cultural arts in public school curricula; to share the beauty of Hispanic drama with the entire community; and to create a pool of talented well-trained, experienced Hispanic theater artists.
