Event Details

This concert cycle features stories from a dark time in American history, anchored by Evan Williams' A Mother's Love. In Williams' words, "the texts are by Black female poets who were involved in the Abolitionist movement. They decry the evils of slavery, its destruction of families, and ask fellow white mothers to stand against slavery, in the name of love and family." Rounding out the program are Gabriela Lena Frank's Honey for soprano, mezzo-soprano and piano; Laura Elise Schwendinger's Love Sonnets for mezzo-soprano and violin, which set Shakespeare's Sonnets 116, 147, and 18; and Louise Farrenc's Trio for clarinet, cello, and piano, Op. 44.

CHAI Collaborative Ensemble

CCE is a Chicago-based collective of musicians dedicated to honoring history, advocating for new works, and engaging with communities through performing substantial and approachable programs of mixed vocal and instrumental chamber music. Our repertoire runs the gamut, ranging from beloved classics to newly commissioned works, with many hidden gems along the way. We are a flexible ensemble, meaning that audience members are treated to music performed by varying combinations of instruments and voices.

We believe that, at its best, music is a co-creative and inclusive art form. In addition to performing at a high musical caliber, we strive to provide joyful and convivial concert experiences for all our audience members, whether they are seasoned concertgoers or are attending a classical music concert for the very first time. All are welcome at our performances, and we want to share our music with as many people as possible.

We see music as a means of bringing people together and of being engaged in the communities in which we perform. As artists and performers, we feel called to pay homage to history while also taking the art form forward and breaking down barriers between performers and audience members. In future seasons, the musicians of CHAI Collaborative plan to present programs in partnership with various community organizations to encourage dialogue about the issues we as a society currently face.
