CCCOE Distinguished Speaker Series: Teaching Earth Systems and Building Design using STEAM with Ladie Malek

Earth Systems can be taught as a very interdisciplinary unit, incorporating everything from geology, paleontology, and oceanography to structural engineering, architecture, and business planning. Participants in this workshop will explore phenomenon-based curriculum design and story line development. Ladie Malek will take participants through the 5E lesson structure for guided inquiry using earth science mysteries. Participants will learn about some of the processes that shape our planet while exploring NGSS units, including a STEAM engineering project. Content will be focused on Middle School NGSS Standards, but the pedagogy is adapted to all grades.

Ladie Malek, Impact Science

Ladie started out as a structural engineer before finding her calling as an educator. She  taught math and science at the secondary level, writing several lessons and curriculum  to  engage all students in science and math. Ladie is passionate about creating content  that  is motivating and engaging for students and user-friendly for educators. Ladie holds  a BS  in Civil Engineering from UCLA, an MA in Education from Stanford University.
