According to Business Today, the state's most significant  growth for employment is forecasted to be in jobs related to the Retail, Hospitality and Tourism (RHT) industries. "Doing What Matters" is the call to action that the California Community Colleges are taking to improve workforce training in 10 industries, that include RHT, by investing in California's journey toward economic recovery and jobs creation at the local, regional and state levels.

How does this impact you?  Funding has been allocated to the Los Angeles and Orange County region to support and improve workforce training in RHT.  It is among the 10 industries identified as Priority and Emergent Sectors on which the "Doing What Matters" initiative will be focused:
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Advanced Transportation
  • Agriculture, Water & Environmental Technologies
  • Energy (Efficiency) & Utilities
  • Global Trade & Logistics
  • Health
  • Information & Communication Technologies
  • Life Sciences/Biotech
  • Retail/Hospitality/Tourism (RHT)
  • Small Business
As an employer of RHT, college instructor, high school teacher, etc. you can have a direct impact on how future employees are trained for occupations in the retail, hospitality and tourism industry. The key focus of this initiative is to collaborate with stakeholders like yourselves to improve workplace performance and increase productivity through industry-based, workforce training...beginning in high school, through college, and in the workplace setting.

The aforementioned sectors are assigned Deputy Sector Navigators (DSN) based on a regional location.  The DSNs are given a budget and will develop Advisory Boards with representatives from industry and workforce development to contribute toward the alignment of certificate and degree programs, as well as implement activities that promote career pathways for students interested in these fields.
