Description

Build with Watson and the Raspberry Pi

Format: In-person, hands-on

The workshop cost of $80 includes:

  • Raspberry Pi Model 3

  • Official Raspberry Pi Case

  • International Power Supply

  • 16GB SD Card pre-loaded with Linux

  • USB Camera+Microphone

Total hours: 3.0 (two sessions)

What is a Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a tiny Linux computer that is designed to be small and inexpensive as possible. It can be connected to sensors and other devices that interface with the real world. At this workshop, each participant’s Raspberry Pi will be connected to a USB camera and microphone to collect data from to capture data about the real world.

Why Watson?

The Raspberry Pi is designed to be inexpensive, not powerful. With Watson, we can leverage the power of cloud computing to enable powerful machine learning APIs to recognize objects in images, and even to recognize human speech.

What Could I Build?

This workshop will include a tutorial on getting your Raspberry Pi working with Watson. After that, the possibilities are almost limitless.

Examples of potential projects (subject to your coding skills and your imagination):

  • Automatic translator: Recognize a person’s speech with Watson and translate it to another language on the computer screen. (Note: monitors will be provided in the lab, but the Raspberry Pi does not include its own monitor.)

  • Argument detector: Listen for speech in the background, and use Watson Tone Analyzer to detect if someone sounds angry.

  • Smart security camera: Capture images with the video camera and raise an alarm if a person is detected in the frame (but not, for example, if a dog or cat is detected).

Who is This Workshop For?

This workshop is for anyone who has an interest in using Watson’s cognitive tools to build systems that interact with the real world. To get the most out of this workshop, it is helpful to understand the basics of Python programming and Linux.
