About this Event

Class dates and Times: Wednesdays, September 11 - October 30, 2019 (8 weeks)

All classes are held from 6:00 -7:30 PM

Developed by Lobsang Negi, Ph.D at Emory University in 2004, this course is an introduction to the concepts and meditation practices that form the basis for gradually training the mind to enhance the trait of compassion toward self and others.

CBCT® (Cognitively-Based Compassion Training) is a system of contemplative exercises designed to strengthen and sustain compassion. Practices include training in attentional stability and increased emotional awareness, as well as targeted analytical reflections to understand better one’s relationship with self and others. The reflective exercises seek critical insights into the way one’s mindsets and attitudes can be shifted to support personal resiliency, to foster an inclusive and more accurate understanding of others, and ultimately to intensify altruistic motivation. With practice, informed compassion can become a spontaneous response that permeates one’s life.

Each week, participants will explore in depth through discussion, guided mediation practice, and experiential activities tools to Participants will also receive recorded guided meditations to support their practice in between class sessions, and to continue practice on their own after the class ends.

This course is open to any adult interested in exploring methods of cultivating compassion, as well as deepening their understanding of the psychology of compassion. Both experienced meditators and those with no prior meditation experience are welcomed.
