Description

The Cause Mapping Online Workshop is divided into 4 modules totaling 10 hours of live training. The first 3 modules will teach you all of the material. The fourth module is a unique one-on-one session with one of our Cause Mapping Facilitators to provide feedback on a problem investigation that you choose. This final session serves as an opportunity to practice what you’ve learned on your problem. You will have up to 1 month following the 3rd module to schedule your Module 4 Review. This module is often recognized as the most beneficial exercise of the course.

How it Works

Our online workshop has been developed to provide the same caliber of training as our live in-person public course. This is achieved through a combination of:

  • Live interactive lectures
  • Application exercises
  • Self study and homework assignments (completed outside of the live sessions)
  • Assessments
  • Comprehensive case study exercise on a problem you designate

The Cause Mapping online workshop is led using the Adobe Connect Platform. The Adobe platform allows us to take advantage of a mix of training tools (polls, lecture, case studies, Q&A, assessments, and exercises) to enhance the interaction and achieve the learning objectives. Before your first module, you will receive an enrollment packet that includes a workbook and other tools needed to participate in the workshop, along with a username and log-in to access the training sessions and download student resources.

At the scheduled time of your training module, simply click on the provided link to join the session. For the audio portion, you will have the option of listening via your computer speakers, or you can also dial into a conference bridge via telephone (recommended). During the training sessions, you will be encouraged to participate via:

  • Workbook exercises
  • Online polls
  • Question and answer (via chat or over the phone)
  • Assessments to verify learning objectives
  • Shared experiences from other students
  • Excel documentation exercise (using the Cause Mapping Template)
  • One-on-one review of your case study exercise

Between the modules, additional self-study exercises and activities are assigned to further enhance your knowledge and understanding of the material.

Agenda

Module 1 - Tuesday 12:00PM - 3:00PM CST – Cause Mapping Fundamentals

The first module consists of lecture and exercises to introduce the Cause Mapping approach, review principles and concepts, and practice the mechanics of Cause Mapping. Additional exercises are assigned for self-study following the module.

Module 2 – Wednesday 12:00PM - 3:00PM CST - Facilitating a Complete Investigation

The second module focuses on how to incorporate the Cause Map within a complete and comprehensive investigation. It addresses evidence collection and documentation, facilitation techniques, and getting participation through a prevention focus. The module will also show you when and how to incorporate other useful investigation tools such as timelines, diagrams, photos, and process maps.

Module 3 – Thursday 12:00PM - 3:00PM CST - Documentation & Other Applications

The third module focuses on the documentation skills needed to effectively investigate a problem. The module utilizes hands-on practice to help develop documentation skills. Each attendee must have Microsoft Excel on their computer to practice the tips and lessons during the module.

Module 4 – (set up by attendee) Case Study Application and Review

The final module is designed to provide feedback on a Cause Mapping Investigation conducted by the attendee. Once Module 3 is completed, the attendee will identify a problem within their organization to investigate, applying what was learned. ThinkReliability will assign an instructor to coach and provide feedback as the attendee works through the problem. The ThinkReliability coach will coordinate a time to review the incident online once it is ready. It is recommended that this exercise be completed within 2 weeks of attending Module 3. This module is often cited as the most valuable exercise within the workshop as attendees receive personalized feedback on a real world problem in their organizations.

Organized by

ThinkReliability focuses on problems and processes. As consultants, we lead and document complete investigations of specific client issues. In our Cause Mapping workshops, we teach individuals how to thoroughly investigate and prevent everything from day-to-day recurring problems to catastrophic events. Our consultants and instructors all have strong technical backgrounds with extensive practical experience from the field.

We provide fundamental skills that simplify the concepts of root cause analysis, incident investigation, and problem solving. We improve the way people communicate the details of what they know to discover better solutions. High reliability requires a basic understanding of problems and processes and involves both management and the people who perform the work.  We start with whatever fits the client’s specific needs. That may be one problem, one group, one site, or even a complete strategy to establish a reliability culture across the organization.

The Cause Mapping method is an extremely effective systems-thinking approach to root cause analysis that improves the way people collect and organize information. It minimizes terminology and buzzwords by focusing on basic principles. Clear communication is required for solving problems effectively. The Cause Mapping method teaches individuals how to document information with pen and paper, using dry-erase boards or chart paper, or electronically in Microsoft Excel. The Cause Mapping method is used in a variety of industries by front line employees as well as management to prevent problems and improve results.
