Description

Cathy Guisewite, creator of the comic strip Cathy, will be with us on April 8th for a special event just days after the launch of her new book, FIFTY THINGS THAT AREN'T MY FAULT.

Tickets for this event are $32 and include a copy of the book. The bookstore will close at 4:00 pm and re-open at 4:30 for ticket holders.

As the creator of the "Cathy" comic strip, Cathy Guisewite found her way into the hearts of readers over forty years ago, and has been there ever since. Her deeply funny and relatable look at the life of a frazzled career woman became a cultural touchstone for women everywhere, and now, in her debut essay collection, Guisewite returns with her signature self-deprecating wit and warmth, this time taking a look at her own life.

These deeply autobiographical essays offer a disarming, hilarious, and wise look at the lives of "the sandwich generation," (which Guisewite calls "the panini generation") and is centered around the particular challenge of caring for aging parents and growing children, all while trying not to lose oneself in the process. In this collection with nearly a hundred pieces of original spot art interspersed throughout the text,Guisewite turns her gaze to her own day-to-day life, with topics ranging from the mundaneteaching her parents to use TiVo, organizing four decades of photos, attempting to meditateto the more profoundher struggle to find a purpose post-retirement, helping her parents downsize their lives, and her personal definitions of feminism. In the spirit of Nora Ephron and Erma Bombeck,FIFTY THINGS THAT AREN’T MY FAULTis ideal reading for mothers, daughters, and everyone who is caught somewhere in between, and on the threshold of "What Happens Next."

Cathy Guisewite first launched the “Cathy” comic strip in 1976 and it appeared in over 1,400 newspapers around the world for thirty-four years. The strips have been compiled into more than twenty books, and earned Guisewite the National Cartoonists Society Reuben Award in 1992 and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program for the TV special of “Cathy” in 1987. During that time, Guisewite appeared on the Tonight Show fifteen times, charming both Jay Leno and Johnny Carson—and when the strip said farewell in 2010, it was covered from CNN to Gawker to the New York Times to Saturday Night Live.

While “Cathy” is no longer running, Guisewite still remains deep in the zeitgeist and in the lives of women today. Last year, she authored an extremely popular op-ed in the New York Timesabout Mary Tyler Moore and the Women’s March, and the image of “Cathy” was featured on many signs at the women’s marches. These essays are what Guisewite would have said weekly if she wasn’t limited to three squares in the funny pages.

The book has gotten high advance praise including this from Gloria Steinem:

"Cathy Guisewite must have discovered early that laughter is the only free emotion—the only one that cannot be compelled—because she gave us the gift of freedom in her Cathy comic strip. Now, in Fifty Things That Aren't My Fault, she has written a book that will help us free our lives to the very end."

This will be an event to remember. Round up your friends and come together to enjoy this special presentation.
