Event description

Description

This delightful Sunday afternoon recital is presented by rising American soprano, Catherine Wethington, accompanied by collaborative pianist Wei-Han Wu and with guest artist, Troy Paolantonio, flautist and member of the United States Army Field Band. Together, they will perform a collection of four songs that evoke the sounds of nature, including Handel’s “Sweet Bird”, Delibes' "Le Rossignol", David’s “Charmant oiseau”, and Benedict’s "The Gypsy and the Bird”. Also featured will be the "Three Browning Songs" by Amy Beach, America's first successful female composer of large-scale art music, as well as a collection of songs by Stephen Foster, who is known as the father of American songwriting. The recital will end with a few wonderful surprises in the form of popular arias from the American and Italian repertoire.

The audience is cordially invited to greet the artists at a champagne reception following the recital.

Catherine Wethington, lyric coloratura soprano, has been hailed for her powerful voice, exquisite pianissimos and delightful artistry. Most recently, she was a finalist and winner in the 2019 Benjamino Gigli/Benvenuto Franci International Vocal Competition, where she was recognized for her expansive vocal range and flowing line. In October 2019, Ms. Wethington toured in Kosovo, North Macedonia and Albania with the 2019 Kosova Kamerfest, accompanied by internationally renowned classical pianist Derek Han. Opusalb.com described her performance as “enthusiastically welcomed … warmly applauded with many standing ovations.” “The audience showed warmth and appreciation for the soprano Wethington”. We are pleased that she will bring this concert home to Washington on November 17.

In July 2019, she debuted the role of Medora in Verdi's "Il Corsaro" with Operavision in Bussetto, Italy, and in April 2019 she debuted the role of Amina in Bellini’s "La Sonnambula" with Opera Niagara. Opera Canada Magazine wrote of her performance: "As Amina..., American soprano Catherine Wethington had the vocal power and dramatic finesse for this touchstone bel canto role. Wethington's voice was compelling in the mournful passages, such as Ah! non credea mirarti, but she was also able to produce the vocal fireworks necessary for her joyful final aria, Ah! Non giunge uman pensiero". Also in April 2019, Ms. Wethington performed the songs of Handel, David, Delibes and Benedict with the La Musica Chamber Music Festival at the Sarasota Opera House, where the Herald Tribune hailed her "sumptuous coloratura and gracefully floated, otherwordly pianiassimos". "The interplay between [the flute] and Wethington was nothing short of stunning, a musical gymnastics of sorts.... the impeccable performance was awarded a standing ovation by the awestruck audience". In 2018, Ms. Wethington was the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana with the Choral Artists of Sarasota and YourObserver.com wrote of her performance "Soprano Catherine Wethington, clad in a beautiful red gown in stark contrast to the solid black of everyone else, was the most effective, singing with a lovely clear floating sound throughout".

Upcoming performances include a February 2020 return to Florida, where she will appear with the Choral Artists of Sarasota at the Venice Performing Arts Center, as the soprano in Carmina Burana. In April 2020, she will perform the role of Medora in Verdi’s Il Corsaro with Opera Niagara.
