Description

From landing a teaching job to making the leap to a full-time position to publishing the materials you've created over years of experience, this workshop "Developing Career Paths in ESL" reaches out to new teachers and seasoned professionals alike to develop their careers in meaningful ways. There will be individual presentations and a combined panel session featuring four experts in the ESL field:

  • "Preparing for and Succeeding in an ESL Position" presented by Rob Jenkins, Professor of ESL and the Professional Development Coordinator at Santa Ana College, School of Continuing Education. He was the recipient of the Santa Ana College Distinguished Faculty Award, and for publishing, the Heinle Outstanding Achievement Award. Rob is the co-author of Stand Out, a series published by National Geographic Learning.
  • "More Than the Interview: Tips on Getting and Keeping That Teaching Job" presented by Katie Pugel, who hires and supports teachers in multiple programs as UCI’s Academic Coordinator with English Language Programs at the Division of Continuing Education. Her background includes English language and teacher training at UCI and abroad, and corporate writing and editing.
  • "The Perils, Possibilities, and Pleasures of Self-Publishing ESL Books" presented by Eric Roth, who teaches academic writing and public speaking skills to to international graduate students at the University of Southern California (USC) as a Master Lecturer. He also writes and edits books for English language learners with Chimayo Press.
  • "Seven Steps to Prepare for a Full-Time Position" presented by Margaret Teske, a full-time ESL instructor and program administrator for 30 years in private IEPs and at Mt. San Antonio College. She works with faculty on professional development and assists with interviews and scheduling. She has served as a past CATESOL Chapter Coordinator and CATESOL President. Currently, she is the President of the CATESOL Education Foundation.

The workshop will be held in the UCI Division of Continuing Education (DCE) building. It is labeled #8 (quadrant H11) on the core campus map. Registration includes parking and all activities listed in the Event Program above. We apologize if you received a flyer indicating that lunch wil be served. This half-day event does not include lunch, but there are many excellent restaurants and cafes nearby where workshop particiapants can continue exchanging ideas.

Online registration ends on Friday, February 1, 2019. Onsite registration will be available on February 9, the day of the workshop, at a surcharge of $15.
