Event description

Description

Led by poet, Shima Robinson and graffiti artist, AJA Louden, this workshop explores the rich, electric space between words and images, where poetry and contemporary muralism might meet and spark creative explosions.

No previous art or poetry writing experience is required.

This is a public program as part of the John and Maggie Mitchell's current exhibition, For Position Only - Design Studies Alumni Show, on view now until March 8.

Bios:

AJA Louden is an artist based in Edmonton, Canada. Born to a family tree with roots split between Jamaica and Canada, Louden is a child of contrast. Bold and arresting freehand spray-painted portraits of figures from Jimi Hendrix and Richard Nixon to more local heroes like Rollie Miles often alternate with hand-lettered designs and vibrant patterns borne of a background in graffiti. Louden looks to bring a multifaceted, collaborative, and multi-narrative approach to contemporary urban muralism.

AJA Louden Studios is a venture created to share AJA's work and the work of his skilled friends and colleagues. The goal is making cities and spaces more inspiring, engaging, informed and thoughtful through strategic and compassionate use of art and design.

Amiskwaciwâskahikan aka Edmonton (Treaty 6)-born poet and spoken word artist Shima Robinson embodies, with every poem, the ancient meaning of her chosen pen name. Dwennimmen is the name of an ancient African Adinkra symbol, which means strength, humility, learning and wisdom. It is no surprise, then, that this veteran of the Alberta poetry community uses a searing intellect and dynamic precision-of-language to create poetry which ushers her readers and listeners toward greater understanding and poignant reflection. For Dwennimmen, poetry has long been a compass, a salve, an anchor and guiding light. She uses the potential and force of poetry to uncover the full range of her cerebral, linguistic and spiritual fortitude. This is why her every poem and performance testifies to an emerging power and wisdom, an authentic, deeply human potency which she hopes to pass on to listeners and poetry-lovers around the world.
