Catcalls of NYC Turns Five
Event Information
About this event
Catcalls of NYC is a grassroots street art initiative against gender-based street harassment. The project raises public awareness about street harassment by writing instances of harassment on the sidewalks of NYC with chalk, alongside the #stopstreetharassment. The goal of the public art is to stop people in their tracks who may never have experienced harassment and make them consider the experience of being harassed. The Instagram account gathers photos of the public chalk to illustrate how widespread this behavior is. It becomes a platform to educate, create community and promote story sharing.
Stop Street Harassment (SSH) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to documenting and ending gender-based street harassment worldwide. They run a national hotline, host a blog, lead educational efforts and organize community mobilization.
Catcalls of NYC, hosted by Stop Street Harassment, is celebrating 5 years of activism against street harassment with gender justice leaders, activists, and performers from around the world. Join us.
