Description

ABOUT THE WEEKEND:

The Pediatric-Adolescent Diabetes Research Education (PADRE) Foundation Catalina Island Adventure Camp is a weekend getaway of team-building challenges, marine activities, diabetes education, and a variety of opportunities for personal growth for youth 11-16 years of age AND their friends (with or without diabetes). Long Beach Marine Institute and their staff will host nature and astronomy hikes, snorkeling, kayaking, tide pool studies, and fish dissections!

Each camper will be assigned to an age appropriate sleeping cabin and age appropriate activity group(s) that will include one to two cabin counselors along with 8-12 campers.

TYPE 1 DIABETES:

This weekend is designed for youth living with Type 1 diabetes AND their friends with or without diabetes. Our counselors are highly trained in diabetes management with most of them living with Type 1 diabetes themselves. In addition a medical team will be on-site monitoring all the campers’ diabetes control throughout the weekend.

TRANSPORTATION:

Participants will board the RV Challenger which is owned and operated by Long Beach Marine Institute. All campers must be at the Long Beach Marine Institute boat dock located at 5875 Appian Way, Long Beach by 6:00 a.m. on Friday, April 27th for check-in. We will return Sunday, April 29th around 12:30 p.m. More information will be provided once you register.

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING (CIT) Program:

Open to youth ages 17-18, with or without diabetes, has an application process by calling the PADRE Foundation 714-509-8330 (do not process payment or fill out the online camper appliation). Qualifications we look for in our counselors in training are teens that can demonstrate a level of maturity that enables them to assume responsibility and develop strong leadership skills. The applicant must demonstrate an interest in camping and show the ability to learn and work with diabetic children. Being a healthy role-model for children with diabetes is critical! The objective of program is to build a strong counseling staff for our program and promote leadership in our communities and at camp. Responsibilities will include learning camp operations, developmental needs of children, how to lead a group, and other key components of a camp staff member. Cost is $295
