Event description

Description

For our first CAST (City Alps adventure story telling evening), we are super excited to be hosting adventure cyclists JB and Sam. JB's story of a 26600km bicycle adventure between Switzerland and South Africa, via Africa's West Coast, will follow Sam Thomas's recent experience from the ‘Race Around the Netherlands’ (1900km in 4days 4hrs 3min)

What does it take to be adventure-ready? How do you prepare and plan for a 2-year journey through Africa? What is most important? Is it physical strength, the quality of the equipment, the mindset ... or perhaps luck?

Illustrated with hundreds of photos, JB will go through:

  • how he got into cycle touring and what he likes about it

  • how to buy the right gear and prepare for a long journey

  • what are the biggest dangers, safety and health risks

  • what to eat and where to sleep, and how much it costs

  • whether the feeling of freedom is worth pushing a fully loaded bicycle in the mud ;)

The talk will feature photos from the rainy season in Sierra Leone and Liberia, the straight lines in the deserts in Mauritania and Namibia, the less-traveled roads in Nigeria and Angola, the wilderness in Gabon and Congo versus cycling in cities like Dakar or Accra.
