This immersion case-study will focus on the majestic wines of Piedmont, in-depth. We all know and love Piedmont as the home of Barolo, known as the King of Wines, and the Wine of Kings, but there is much more to this awe-inspiring land than just Barolo and white truffles. The diversity of wines from Piedmont is staggering, and could never be completely covered in a much broader Foundation course on Italian wines. So, through a mixed-case of 12 meticulously selected wines, we will put Piedmont under the microscope, and in doing so we'll explore and examine several celebrated jewels from the region. We will scrutinize various expressions of Nebbiolo including those from Langhe, Alba, Barbaresco and, of course, Barolo, but we will also explore other regional varietals including Dolcetto, Barbara, Gavi (Cortese), and Arneis, among others. The wines from Piedmont are among the most-celebrated wines in the world. They have been for a very long time, and through this class, we will endeavor to experience why. We expect to see some fan favorites at this one. Italy Foundation 1 or experiential equivalent is recommended for students taking this more advanced class on Italian wine.

This program is hosted by The Somm School in association with Michael La Vardera. Michael has spent the last 22 years in the wine industry has served progressively increasing roles as Sommelier for NYC restaurants, Beverage Director, and ultimately Corporate Beverage Director for multiple-unit, multi-State restaurant groups. He is an accomplished Wine Educator who served nearly a decade as the Director of Wine Education for a national supplier of import brands, where he also evaluated and selected which brands to import in the United States. He has also appeared on Television as host for 2 cable television series on Wine Education, and as “Michael The Sommelier” on Food Network and Bravo TV. Michael comes to The Somm School via New York City.
